Can someone instruct me if I should be manually assigning IP/Gateway/DNS for these adapters in Windows to make them all happy with one another and the VM environment? Read somewhere that VirtualBox host adapter acts as a loopback, making the MS one unnecessary? Similarly, the loop back adapter and the Virtual Box host-only adapter also get 169.x.x.x, though I do not know if they are also working, or are not needed or. The other thing I would mention is that I am not sure how the adapters are meant to look when running pfSense or similar networking firewalls/arrangements out of a virtual environment.Īs mentioned before, my Local connection 2 (LAN) gets an assigned IP(from me(or initial DHCP setup)), however the PPPOE WAN always shows unidentified 169.x.x.x network.
#Pfsense virtualbox network adapters how to#
I was over the moon at successfully setting up pfSense in VirtualBox and feel I am close to finishing this project, though have this one last hurdle to pass.Ĭan anyone offer suggestions on how to get the game server(s)/programs to see the Local Area Connection 2 (I assume this is what it should be seeing in order for it to work), or the WAN connection overall? Having said that, I do wonder if it's still necessary to arrange some type of LAN rule for these instances. My VPN provider allows port forwarding from their end to exit side, meaning I do not have to adjust any ports/NAT rules in the pfSense firewall. My pfSense is configured to kill any connections that reside outside of the tunnel. VirtualBox Host-Only Network - 169.254.4.202Īdditionally, I use a VPN which also works. Local Area Connection 2 (LAN) - Network 3 has an assigned 192.x.x.x Local Area Connection (WAN) - Unidentified network on 169.254.43.157

Rather it's using 169.254.4.202 which is the VirtualBox Host-Only network. an actual assigned internal address - as I could manage port forwarding. This would not be a problem in itself if it was using a 192.x.x.x.

While I have full local network and WAN access, when I run servers - a game for example, it's shown to be using an internal IP address. I recently setup pfSense in Virtual Box on a server machine that has a quad NIC.
